Ogun IPP: Abiodun inspects power plant, assures of 24-hour electricity

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that a 30-megawatt Independent Power Plant (IPP), designed to provide uninterrupted electricity to Abeokuta, will be commissioned in eight weeks.

Speaking after inspecting the facility in Onijanganjangan, near Ewekoro, Abiodun described the project as the first phase of the Ogun State Light Up Project, a public-private partnership aimed at delivering stable electricity across the state.

The governor emphasized that while Abeokuta requires more than 30MW, this initial phase is part of a broader plan to generate 100MW.

“I have seen the control room, turbines, and gas pipelines, which will be completed in three to six weeks. A diesel backup system is also in place to ensure continuous power supply,” Abiodun said.

He assured that once operational, a significant portion of Abeokuta would enjoy 24-hour electricity, marking a historic milestone for the state.

The power plant will prioritize government institutions, including offices, hospitals, security agencies, local government offices, and higher institutions. Plans are also underway to extend supply to private individuals and industries as capacity expands.

Abiodun highlighted that following the federal government’s removal of power generation from the exclusive list, Ogun State is now actively investing in power infrastructure. Similar plants will be established in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota to enhance statewide electricity coverage.

To ensure proper regulation, the Ogun State House of Assembly has enacted a law establishing the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee power generation, distribution, and transmission in the state.

Project Manager Mr. Selvin Leo confirmed that the plant is 90% complete, with work progressing swiftly. He assured that, with the availability of materials and ongoing commitment from workers, the project would be delivered on schedule.
