Kogi: Accident claims 5 lives on Lokoja/ Ajaokuta

A broad daylight accident on Tuesday, 6 January, claimed five lives, including three children at Gidan Bassa, a small community on the Lokoja/ Ajaokuta highway in Kogi State.

Details obtained from the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, showed that the dead children were two females and one male, while the adults were a male and a female. They all died on the spot of the accident, which occurred around 11:40 am.

According to FRSC, the accident involved two vehicles, a Toyota Avensis car belonging to Omala Local Government and a Sino truck belonging to Dangote Cement Plc.

The report further showed that the car with registration Kogi BJK172LG and truck with registration number REG:BBR719SA had a head on collision, leading to the death of five people on the spot.

The FRSC explained that 12 people were involved in the accident and that the remaining seven occupants sustained bruises, fractures, and other minor injuries.

The injured victims were taken to Ekpe Hospital, Ganaja, and ASCO Hospital, Ajaokuta, for treatment while the corpses of the dead victims were deposited at the morgue of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.

While attributing the cause of the accident to wrongful overtaking,
the FRSC advised motorists to always moderate their speed and watch well before overtaking on the highways.

The FRSC said four hand held phones recovered from the scene of the accident are under its care while the vehicles and other luggage were handed over to policemen from Ajaokuta Division.
