INEC Shifts back 2027 General Elections to January, February

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the 2027 General Elections, moving the Presidential and National Assembly polls to Saturday, January 16, 2027, and the Governorship and State Assembly elections to Saturday, February 6, 2027.

The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education committee, Mohammed Haruna, announced the new election timetable in a statement issued on Thursday.

The electoral body said the adjustment follows the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which altered statutory timelines for pre-election and election activities nationwide, adding that the commission reviewed and realigned the earlier released schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework.
