China cautions US over Nigeria

The Chinese government has warned the United States against any form of external interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs.

The warning comes after United States President Donald Trump threatened military action in Nigeria over an alleged persecution of Christians.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, said the country “firmly supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it leads its people on the development path suited to its national conditions.”

Ning stressed that the Chinese government would not support any country using religion and human rights to interfere in other nations’ internal affairs, adding that Nigeria remains China’s “comprehensive strategic partner”.

“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” she said.

Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing alleged persecution of Christians.

Trump warned that the U.S. could suspend assistance to Nigeria or take military action if the government “continues to condone the killing of Christians”.

The president said if the federal government “continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S. will immediately stop all aid and assistance and may very well go into that disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
