AFCON 2025: Super Eagles defeat Algeria to book a slot in the semifinals

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have reached the semifinals of the 2025 AFCON. They beat Algeria 2–0 at the Stade de Marrakech.

This game marked the 10th time both countries went head to head, with Nigeria winning today and moving their total wins against the Desert Foxes to four. Algeria has also won four matches against the Super Eagles, with both teams settling for draws on two occasions.

Today’s victory ensured that Nigeria will face Morocco, the host nation, after Morocco beat Cameroon in the quarterfinals.

The game today was attack versus defense. Algeria, unbeaten in all four of their previous matches, had conceded the fewest goals in the tournament—just one.

The Super Eagles came into the match on the back of a 4–0 win over Mozambique in the round of 16, having scored the most goals in the tournament, 12.

From the very first minute, Nigeria asserted their dominance. They pressed high, forced errors from Algeria, and controlled the tempo of the game.

Osimhen, known for his power, speed, and goal-scoring ability, was supported by Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi worked in the middle of the field, linking defence to attack.

In the first half, Nigeria did everything but score. Akor missed a one-on-one opportunity.

Things changed for the better in the second half when Osimhen rose to power a bullet header to put Nigeria ahead and later assisted Akor Adams to make it 2–0, 10 minutes after the first goal.

Nigeria controlled the game from midfield, with Wilfred Ndidi breaking up Algerian attacks. Ndidi picked up a yellow card, which means he will miss the semifinal due to suspension.
Algeria made substitutions to try and turn the match around, but Nigeria’s defence and composure kept them in control until the final whistle.

The Super Eagles now advance to the semifinals, where they will face hosts Morocco.
